Who is eligible for VESID
services?
To be eligible for VESID
services you must have a
physical, mental, emotional or
learning disability that
interferes with your ability to
function. Only people that can,
and want to, become gainfully
employed, can qualify for VESID.
Your eligibility for services is
determined by an assessment of
your disability, your ability to
work, and your areas of strength
and weakness.
How do I apply for VESID?
Your first contact with VESID
can occur either through your
vocational counselor (if you are
in a program) or through
Americana Driving School, Corp.. Call us
[at (212) 927-0008], and make an
appointment with us, so that we
can arrange for you to attend an
orientation at your local VESID
office.
Attending a VESID orientation is
the first step that everyone
must take to enrolling in VESID.
There, you will be given all the
papers that are required to
become a part of VESID, and all
eligibility questions will be
answered there. Orientations are
by appointment only, and are
conducted ONLY at the VESID
office in your borough of
residence. For example, if you
live in the Manhattan, you will only
be allowed to attend a VESID
orientation at the Manhattan VESID
office. Furthermore, if you
accidentally make an appointment
with a VESID office in the wrong
borough, they will turn you
away, and you will have wasted
your time..
What services can I receive?
Once VESID has determined that
you meet their requirements,
they will help you out in
several ways. Depending on what
you need, you will receive one
or more of the following
services:
1) A vocational evaluation, to
determine what skills and
abilities you have, what type of
work is best for you, and which
services you will need in order
for you to get a rewarding job
and live as independently as
possible.
2) Guidance and counseling, to
help you with any problems you
may have.
3) Job training and work
adjustment training, to learn
the skills you need to know, for
the job you want to do.
4) All books and tools, that are
necessary for your training.
5) Carfare money is provided to
all students, for the duration
of their training.
6) A job coach, who will assist
you in learning the necessary
skills to do the job well.
7) Supported employment
services: (services to help you
keep your job.)
